City Description

Shanghai, where history and modernity coexist

Shanghai, a city central to China’s economics, trade, and finance.

Introducing the vibrant and beautiful city where the very open and proud people of Shanghai live. After the Treaty of Nanking, Shanghai opened up as a trading city for powerful nations, including Britain, the U.S., France, and others. Afterwards, it developed rapidly by combining Chinese culture and Western values. Here, you will find buildings that are almost 100 years old that preserve the history of the concession period, along with tall modern buildings that reach towards the sky. It’s an attractive city where the past and present exist side by side.

Shanghai is divided by the Huangpu River into Pudong and Puxi. The Bund, boasting incredibly beautiful night views of the Huangpu River, houses historic, modern, western-style high-rise architecture built from 1910–30. With modern structures such as the Oriental Tower, etc., on the other side, it is a beautiful place that captures the charm of today’s Shanghai. The night view from Bund is tops among recommended sights to see. Immerse yourself in the charms of Shanghai, with its old provisional government buildings, memorial hall, the significant location of Yun Bong-gil’s anti-Japanese activities in Lu Xun Park, shopping district, Nanjing Road, Huaihai Road, Xintiandi that resembles a street of cafes in Europe, Tianzifang, narrow art streets, and the Shanghai Museum.
