City Description

Los Angeles, the city of angels

In Los Angeles, the city of angels, nothing is impossible. LA is a city of immigrants where anyone can start fresh. It is a city of dreams where immigrants with different races, languages, incomes, religions, and backgrounds live together in the name of ”Angelo”.

In 1781, 44 Spanish immigrants first settled in the downtown area and the city was born. A missionary at the time named it ”Los Angeles”. Early Los Angeles was shared biculturally between white immigrants and wealthy Mexican farmers, but when California ceded to the United States in 1846 after the Mexican–American War, the transcontinental railroad linking Sacramento to the east was completed along with the Gold Rush, and LA has developed at a rapid pace since.

LA has also shown its commitment to cultural awareness and is famous for its high class cultural spaces including the Los Angeles Music Center, the Los Angeles County Museum, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown. In just 20 years, dozens of theater structures were built, including the Getty Center in West LA in 1997 and Crypto.com Arena (formerly known as Staples Center), a multi-purpose sports arena, in downtown LA in 1999, stripping LA off of its old image as a cultural wasteland and reinventing it as a new cultural city.

Travel Tip

1. Temperature
The sunlight in Southern California is extremely strong, so be sure to bring sunglasses and sunscreen. The temperature variation is not severe throughout the year. In the summer, the temperature is high but not humid. Remember to bring a coat as the weather may turn chilly once the sun sets.
The temperature does not go below zero in the winter, but prepare a warm coat as it rains frequently and the sea breeze may be chilly.
2. Transportation
Be sure to plan your trip ahead because it can difficult to travel the area without a rental car or a sightseeing bus as destination sites are not concentrated in the city district and public transportation is not systematically operated.
3. Tipping culture
Don’t forget that tipping is crucial in the United States, and you should always remember to tip where services are provided.
