The second largest city in Spain, Barcelona is a port city on the Mediterranean coast and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Spain. The name ‘Barcelona’ is derived from the ancient Phoenician word ‘Barkeno’. The city is divided into old town, centered around a fortress built in the 14th century, and new town, a checkerboard-like city built in 1859. Most of the buildings in the Gothic Quarter, the heart of old town, were built in the Middle Ages and are listed as World Heritage sites.
Barcelona is also famous as the home of many artists including painter Pablo Picasso and architect Antonio Gaudi. Notably, works of Antonio Gaudi, known as a genius architect, can be found in all corners of the city. There is the Sagrada Familia Cathedral as well as buildings with historical and artistic value all throughout the city.
Barcelona is one of the world’s most prominent coastal cities where you can enjoy seafood dishes that captivate the palates of epicures from around the world. There, you can also feel the energy of Spain through flamenco and soccer.
