Environmental effects management
Environmental effects management
Asiana Airlines’ Gimpo business site and Incheon business site were designated as green companies in 2001 and 2006 respectively, and we are currently maintaining green company certification for these two business sites (Gimpo and Incheon). In addition, all of our environmental facilities are operated at an internal control level of 50% compared to the legal standards, and we are working to minimize the amount of environmental pollutants generated. In addition, we are participating in improving the local environment and implementing technical support for SMEs for environmentally-friendly corporate management and proactive environmental management.
Management of air pollutants
As various chemicals used during aircraft maintenance are likely to affect the atmospheric environment if exposed to the air during work, we have established and are operating optimal prevention facilities to minimize pollutants by emission source to prevent air pollution. In addition, monitoring is conducted on a regular basis so that the results can be recognized by the department in charge and on-site.

Waste management
By establishing a resource recycling and treatment system that efficiently collects waste by classifying it by property, we monitor all waste from its initial generation to final treatment, so it can be managed in accordance with legal requirements. We have taken steps to increase recycling levels for waste generated, and now approximately 70% of all waste is recycled.

Management of aircraft noise
In order to minimize the effect of aircraft noise, our aircraft in operation meet all International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) noise standards and apply the ICAO recommended standards when taking off, etc. In addition, for the first time in Asia we have implemented the CDA (Continuous Descent Approach) landing procedure to reduce noise and usage, and which was proposed by AAPA (Association of Asia Pacific Airlines) jointly with the Seoul Regional Aviation Administration.
Environmental Campaigns
Green Travel, Green Life Carbon reduction campaign
We launched a campaign to provide information on and promote green living principles that can be practiced in daily life and at travel destinations for travelers, and its significance lies in encouraging people to understand and practice the important aspects of green living together.
Eco-friendly Flight
In order to promote customer awareness of greenhouse gas reduction and publicize our efforts, we implemented Korea’s first zero-carbon flight. For our Gimpo-Haneda route that received carbon labeling certification, efforts to save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions were highlighted by concentrating all efforts towards eco-friendly flights, and certificates for eco-friendly activities and greenhouse gas reduction were delivered to passengers.
Environment School
We regularly conduct the “Asiana Environment School,” an event that encourages environmental awareness by inviting elementary school students in Gangseo-gu to our environmental facilities. Recently, content related to climate change has been added, such as climate change and aviation, in addition to basic eco-education, to help children easily understand current environmental issues.
Holding eco-friendly events together
To reduce greenhouse gas emissions, we supported solar-powered street lamps in Siem Reap, Angkor Wat, Cambodia, as well as a tree planting event in Tianjin, China.
Response to Climate Change
Response to Climate Change
Asiana Airlines supports the government’s eco-friendly policies and efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, using fuel-efficient equipment to achieve this. And in aircraft operations, we are improving fuel efficiency and practicing greenhouse gas reduction through weight management, flight scheduling and flight procedure improvements, as well as engine washing during maintenance.
Environmentally friendly business
Introducing new materials
Asiana Airlines plans to gradually phase in eco-friendly aircraft with high fuel efficiency and low noise, manufactured using cutting-edge composite materials, including lightweight yet high-strength carbon fiber and integrating lighter, more aerodynamic technologies.
Activities to reduce fuel and minimize greenhouse gas emissions
We are implementing measures to save fuel and minimize greenhouse gas emissions through the entire process: pre-flight, during take-off and the flight itself, landing, maintenance and checks, and we are continuously developing and applying new ideas.
Buying green
Voluntary agreement on buying green in the industry
To encourage the use of green products, we have established internal green purchasing guidelines and signed a voluntary green purchasing agreement with the Ministry of the Environment. When purchasing aircraft, we choose the latest eco-friendly models with high fuel efficiency, and we are continuously changing items used on board to lightweight ones. Internally, information such as relevant trends and purchase status is provided via our internal bulletin board to raise awareness of buying green among our employees. In addition, when selecting partner companies, we encourage them to prioritize green products, and this is also taken into consideration in company evaluations.
Green energy use
Asiana Airlines has built and is operating a 50kW “eco-friendly solar power generation facility” on the roof of the warehouse building of the 2nd hangar at Incheon International Airport. In-house power generation through solar power has the effect of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by the equivalent of approximately 30 tons of CO2 per year.

Certification
Certification
On December 15, 1995, Asiana Airlines acquired BS7750 certification, a British environmental management standard, from BVQI, and established a systematic environmental management system. In September 1996, this certification was converted to the ISO 14001 environmental management standard and has been operated and maintained since. In addition, we have been designated as a green company (formerly environmentally-friendly company) by the government, received environmental product declaration certification, and verify our greenhouse gas emissions.
The Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) is a method that comprehensively evaluates not only economic aspects but also environmental and social performance and values, going beyond the existing evaluation method that evaluated companies only in financial aspects. Asiana Airlines has been selected as the best company in the aviation industry for 9 consecutive years since 2009 in recognition of its efforts in environmental management activities and global social contribution activities.
'The “Green Star” certification is a Korean management certification system that verifies eco-friendly products/services through various examinations. This includes green service research and confirmation of eco-friendly product/service information in the workplace. Asiana Airlines has been recognized for its efforts to establish a green corporate culture through the development and distribution of various eco-friendly services. It was the first airline to be certified as an eco-friendly company for 6 consecutive years.
In 2009, through the carbon labeling certification system supervised by the Ministry of the Environment and operated by the Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute, we were the first company in Korea to acquire certification for air transportation services (A330-300, Gimpo-Haneda route). Currently, we have renewed and maintained certifications for the Incheon-LA route and Gimpo-Jeju route.
The Incheon hangar has now met the requirements for designation as an eco-friendly facility. This is based on the efficient operation of the entire business site by linking the existing Gimpo business site with the company’s overall environmental operation. We were designated as an eco-friendly company for the first time in the Yeongjong and Yongyu areas by the government, with awards for social responsibility and environmental integrity.
Based on eco-friendly management philosophies, the transparency of environmental management and management is disclosed internally and externally. In response, preparations for the designation system of eco-friendly companies, which is the government’s official certification, have been continuously implemented since 2000. After implementing the service industry guidelines, the efforts to “designate in the service industry for the first time” have come to fruition.
In December 1995, we acquired BS7750 certification, the British environmental management standard, and have established an environmental management system since. In September 1996, the ISO 14001 environmental management system took effect. At the same time, we were awarded the world’s first air transportation certificate, an international environmental management standard.
Green company (formerly environmentally-friendly company) certificate
In 2001, our Gimpo facility (headquarters, Gimpo hangar) was designated as a green company (formerly environmentally-friendly company) for the first time since the service industry guidelines went into effect, and was re-designated in July 2009. Our Incheon business site (Incheon hangar) was designated as the first green company in the Incheon International Airport area in 2006, and was renewed in January 2009. Since our launch as a green company in April 2010, we have been operating two business sites (Gimpo and Incheon) as green companies.
In April 2010, environmentally-friendly companies were newly designated as green companies according to the implementation of relevant laws
