Q What are portable electronic devices? Details
Portable electronic devices refer to light weight electronic devices which are powered by battery or electricity, and are handy and easy to use. They include tablet PCs, e-Readers, portable computer game players, all of which enable the communicating and processing of data. Though mobile phones are not included in this category of portable electronic devices, they can be used when an additional announcement is made by a flight attendant when an aircraft has its doors open or has landed
Specific electronic devices are allowed to be used while an aircraft is moving on the land, landing or taking off. These devices should be able to be gripped in one’s hands or be small enough to be put in the Seat Pocket. In addition, it is noted that the cables or parts of the electronic device should not be in the way of other passengers while disembarking the plane. Some electronic devices which are not small enough to be kept in the Seat Pocket should be stored in the overhead compartment or packed in a bag and put under seats.
Electronic devices, which are bigger than tablet PCs, generally are considered risky due to their size and weight from the physical point of view. In those cases, it is hard for the devices to be stored in the Seat Pocket or in a fixed position, and then easily moved out of the pocket at point of landing or taking off. Therefore it is recommended that larger portable electronic devices, which cannot be kept in the Seat Pocket, should be put in the overhead compartment or packed in a bag to be stored under the seat
In the event that the captain delivers a message to the flight attendants that the use of electronic devices has generated electronic waves and affected the operation of the aircraft, the flight attendants will make an announcement that the electronic devices cannot be used any longer and look around to make sure that all passengers are not using the devices any longer. In addition, the use of said portable electronic devices is subject to visibility, weather, or specific operational circumstances.
Before take-off, flight attendants will make a couple of announcements, and then the doors of the aircraft will be closed. At this time, they will restrict the use of electronic devices by passengers, if required. This instruction should be abided by all passengers so that the attendants can prepare for take-off.
